Favorite Fits #1

Many moons ago, someone anonymously sent me a copy of the wonderful little book Love, Loss and What I Wore, by Ilene Beckerman. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it — it will take less than an hour! But you’ll want to re-read it often.

I sometimes look at an item in my closet and it takes me right back to amazing moments in my life, good and bad. I’m going to share some of my favorite dresses and outfits in a series here!

If you asked me, “what is your all-time favorite dress?” the first one that comes to mind is the short, black, ruffled AllSaints dress made of “Italian technical fabric.” Whatever that is! I just know it is NOT forgiving!

I found this dress at the AllSaints store in the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. I’ll be honest… I was a teeeeensy bit tipsy. It was way out of my price range, but champagne brain told me it’d be okay.

And reader, it WAS.

Here I am trying it on. Not pictured: my cousin Maria, whispering “buy it! buy it!” like a little shopping devil on my shoulder.

I wore this dress to my company’s holiday party at the fabulous London
West Hollywood hotel. I could NOT get it zipped up! It wasn’t that it didn’t fit, it was that the material is so… um… technical… that it would not give at all! I called friends for help and they also failed. We called the concierge, who gave it her all but, no go. We even had someone from engineering come in with pliers. NOPE.

I called my then-boyfriend and said, well, I guess I can’t come down for the party. He came up, held onto his beer cup with his teeth, and zipped that thing right up on the first try. Sheesh. Well, he was good for something!

I wore the dress again to the Emmys, and I actually wrote it into my will that, if it still fits, I should be buried in it. Have you ever loved a dress so much?!

At the Emmys with my long-time friend Ilse. Fun fact: we BOTH eventually won Emmy's! But not at this particular event. We did, however, go nuts at the candy buffet at the Governor’s Ball.
